Systems are greater than the sum of their parts—they are Gestalt by nature. Without the deliberate understanding of the relationship between system structures, outcomes and response in the present, systems degrade and often produce unintended and unwanted consequences. While it is important to be able to map a system’s structure, understanding systems structure is necessary to discover causation for patterns of behaviors and unintended consequences and solve system issues.
